Musk publicly contested these claims, estimating that fake and spam accounts could exceed 20% of users—potentially far higher—and argued that Twitter's SEC filings, which relied on the <5% assertion, undermined the $44 billion deal's valuation.[53] He dismissed Agrawal's explanation with a poop emoji in response, demanding independent verification and later seeking access to Twitter's full "firehose" of raw user data to audit bots personally, a request Twitter partially denied citing privacy risks and tool limitations.[54] [55] In August 2022, Musk escalated by challenging Agrawal to a public debate on the bot percentage, asserting that proving the <5% claim would resolve the issue.[56]

imo real risk to bsky is the overlap of power users, being Mad at jay, and works at a words on dead trees factory leading to bad press

As a former employee of the birdsite, I cosign a lot of this thread. mDAU was the key metric bc churn is high and they need new users just to tread water, and a lot that came through non-English content.
For bsky, if they can't get traction outside the west, the usage metrics are gonna look bad.

1) this platform does not retain users the way every app with traction retains users: with a recommendation algorithm that users generally hate because it tends to serve them content that makes them feel awful and they can’t stop looking at it

Wasn't it? I recall during the takeovers I looked at some data and they had a pretty reliable growth of ... (mDAU? sorry forgot the specific name they used, one of those things Musk dropped so before/after measurement became impossible) was pretty steady every period. It was bigger than Musks
