Rei finally gets (properly) introduced, but I enjoy the awkward and tense first interactions she and Shinji have. Her complete dedication to Gendou versus Shinji's loathing of him is a nice contrast. Meanwhile, Ramiel remains iconic and is a great homage to Return of Ultraman's Prizma.

I feel like Shinji being a girl would mess up a lot of the stuff with Gendou. If he was a Lil' Yui, then I can't imagine Gendou would treat him so horribly.

in all the different series continuities, gendou is trying to undo the samsaric world to heal his wounds, and in the climax shinji inherits the power to make that choice. the fact that he always brings the world back from dissolution is supposed to demonstrate his hard-won maturity.

Tribute to Evangelion where Gendou burns his hands to rescue Rei? Pretty hard to convey a sad scene when you know a character can't be killed off. Bond level up.
