I'm not sure. I know torpor is the more temporary version & diapause is a more longterm state with reduced metabolism & alertness.

Birds are easy. Share your first *living* arthropod of the year. Please don’t dig for one, disturbing its diapause or habitat. My first was a small midge (Chironomidae) on the fence in our backyard. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA a few minutes ago. #bugsky #insect

The Austrolebias affinis inhabits Uruguay's Negro River basin in temporary pools that dry annually. Eggs enter diapause in peat substrate, resisting months of drought until rains return. IUCN lists it vulnerable from agricultural habitat loss.

Known as the Affinis Pearlfish, this carnivorous South American species is a fascinating but short-lived addition for aquarists with some experience.

My pet ants aren't very cold (though I do put them in a cooler place for winter) Diapause isn't as extreme as hibernation. An ant may have a small snack or groom her sisters. But mostly they rest.

Starting in the warm days of March they will wake up and begin a big push to increase their […]

Sometimes, when I’m explaining length of chilling-based winter diapause (hibernation) termination in the mosquitoes I study, I say, “I’m from the south - you can spend Christmas in a t-shirt and then it’ll be back to freezing the next week! And if a mosquito hatches in that warm week, they’re dead,”

Thanks!! 😎 my first set of Semikolon sticky notes were their self-adhesive section divider tabs - my absolute go-tos for binders, books, etc.

Happy winter solstice to you all.

Ever wondered where butterflies go in winter? Many species go into diapause, as a dormant egg, larva, pupa or adult.

1,268 and 636 males were regularly added over ~2-3 months. We collected embryos from diapause eggs, extracted DNA, and tested for paternal alleles. A few embryos carried genetic material from the males, showing that sexual reproduction had occurred, even though most reproduction remained asexual.

We brought together sexual lineages (left part, produce diapause eggs after fertilization by males), and obligate parthenogenetic lineages (right part 'asexual', produce these eggs asexually).

Natives are not enough, NOT a 1-size fits all in climate warmed states… we also need drought tolerant non-natives *in varying colors and flower sizes (🦋 + hummers + 🦇…), Aug-Jan for ALL pollinators - no longer getting a winter rest - or getting bumped out of diapause on warm days… and starving. 🌱

Random caterpillar awakened by the rainy forty degree night apparently, sandwiched between two spells of Arctic air from the collapsing polar vortex. Hopefully he or she will find a suitable spot to resume diapause (dormancy) before tomorrow's return of single digit wind chills.

Where do butterflies and other insects go when it gets cold? Many will migrate, hibernate, or enter a state of suspended development called diapause. Volunteer John Hibbard visited Laufenburg Ranch at the end of Nov. for probably the last time until spring, but was still able to find a few insects.
