The opportunities for photography, or simply enjoying the burgeoning butterfly show, are endless here in a beautiful region of France that's bursting into life in late May.

And naturally, this tour generates a donation to support the great work of @europebutterfly.bsky.social. (2/2)

California Ringlets (Coenonympha california) appear in two broods per year, shifting color with the seasons. Spring’s brood is darker, perhaps to soak up warmth; summer’s brood is a pale buff.

Secondly were the abundant alpine heaths (Coenonympha gardetta) (I think, not so sure about that ID), which took particular interest in my backpack

Of course, genomes only make sense in their ecological context 🌿.
The team documented habitats in Shebenik National Park and Mali i Tatë to link environment with evolutionary history.
👉 That concludes the first STSM of #10kLepGenomes — and marks a strong start for the project!

Together, they focused on two key species: 𝘊𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘢 𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 & 𝘊. 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳.
Both will serve as reference genomes for @projectpsyche.bsky.social , helping clarify taxonomy, gene flow & hybridization.

Estuve persiguiéndola un buen rato hasta que se dio por vencida y se posó. Afortunadamente para ella no soy una alondra.😅

The first known sighting of a Small Heath Butterfly Coenonympha pamphilus, in a small London park this morning - almost certainly attracted there by unmown areas of grassland, and vindicating a more enlightened and accommodating approach to nature. Create suitable habitat, and it will come...

Rapid radiation and some hybridisation lead to a phylogeny full of poorly supported nodes. Very interesting study of the phylogenomic of Coenonympha butterflies by Greenwood et al :

There wasn't much wildlife around on my 12K today, but the glittery #spiderweb I saw reminded me I had a whole file of unsorted #invertebrate photos I hadn't sorted, so here are the #insects and #spider I missed! (Names in ALT)
