The DNA of butterflies & moths is supporting conservation, shedding light on evolution, and could find new ways to stop pests 🦋
1,000 genomes have been released, and @projectpsyche.bsky.social aims to continue until all 11,665 European species have been sequenced🧬

🎉 #Barcoding results from specimens collected in the Mals field-workshop are in — thank you Marko Mutanen!
🧬We confirmed IDs of tricky specimens (mostly microleps), adding 43 new species to @projectpsyche.bsky.social and identifying 14 that need recollection.

Thanks to all who took part!

Real conservation action, guided by genomes!
@ergabiodiv.bsky.social @biogeneurope.bsky.social
Why go beyond the reference genome?
Because population genomics reveals hidden risks — low diversity, genetic drift, and declining gene flow. 🌍
Wetlands are disappearing… and so is genetic diversity.

It was great to be there and collect Lepidoptera in the Italian Alps for @projectpsyche.bsky.social @10klepgenomes.bsky.social, and it's amazing to see it once again through the stunning photos by Luigi Avantaggio in Glenn Zorpette's article in @spectrum.ieee.org 👇
In July, our reporter traveled to the Italian Alps and to Barcelona, Spain, to observe researchers capturing moths and butterflies and then sequencing their genomes. It was all part of the most ambitious biology project ever: to sequence every species on Earth.

A single “sexy” gene can help combat one of the most destructive fruit pests. By deleting the gene that lets female moths produce their mating scent, researchers created an “unsexy” moth and showed a way to turn insect attraction into a powerful pest control tool.
