#CMOS #ChicagoManualOfStyle Fact of the Day!

The 18th edition covers hashtags on social media! Among many updates for the digital age, Section 7.86 says "To ensure hashtags are not only sufficiently legible but also accessible to screen readers, it is best to start each word with a capital letter."

I follow the #AMAManualOfStyle for documents I edit these days, but I have years of experience with using the #ChicagoManualOfStyle, so it is one of my favorite style guides. The mug's artwork shows the use of old-fashioned proofreaders' marks (see http://bit.ly/3cU23kJ).

Why was the date in there twice? And why, the second time, was it only the last numeral? Who can say what message my dream brain was trying to send!

Regardless, GO FOOTNOTES! #cmos #ChicagoManualofStyle #librarianDreams

Remembering the hours I used to spend as an editor researching bibliographical entries. Makes me giddy to realize the #ChicagoManualofStyle no longer requires a place of publication in book citations.

I want to tell my students to use Chicago style, but I also want them to never discover this sentence on the chicagomanualofstyle website: "Note that a place of publication is no longer required in book citations." What to do?

Torn between CMOS and FAFO.

the nomenclature "low information voters" has been replaced with the more accurate "fuckin' dumbshits"

I just discovered another departure from the 17th edition #ChicagoManualOfStyle. Scholastic Grades! I'm glad this didn't come up for me after the 18th came out. Here's an example:

#CMOS17: I mostly got Cs and Bs in high school.

#CMOS18: In college, I got mostly A's.

True facts. #AmEditing 🎓

The CMOS is using ebook now, but Merriam-Webster still has e-book. Is there a list of recommended spellings that vary from MW somewhere I haven't found? Is there a new Good Usage list?
