Interesting map of the ancient Maya world, which is now made up of 5 countries. The Maya culture encompasses an area of 500,000 square kilometers. The 4 pillars of the Classic period are observed: Palenque, Calakmul, Tikal and Copán. (Map from The Mayas, a Millennial Civilization by Nikolai Grube).

This is U Kit Kan Le’k Tok’, ruler of #EkBalam in the late 700s CE. As great Maya cities like Tikal and Calakmul collapsed, U Kit provoked a renaissance at Ek Balam. Image from a stone covering his tomb at the Museo Mundo Maya in Merida.

"That story played out thousands of years ago in the forests of Central America. The people were the Classic Maya, and their cities – like Tikal and Calakmul – became some of the most impressive urban centers in the ancient world."

Edzna is one of the stranger #Maya archaeological sites I’ve been to. Look at that pyramid! Most don’t have that many rooms. Its name means “House of the Itzaes,” but there’s little reminiscent of Chichen Itza. Rather, by the 600s CE, Edzna was an important ally of the Snake Dynasty of Calakmul.

Calakmul sounds like a real challenge. Good for you making it to the top! 🙌
I don't remember any of the temples at Tikal presenting that type of a challenge. Most were well groomed for visitors.
Let me think about this some more before responding further. Please remind me if I forget. lol

Calakmul is difficult - it's giant, the tallest - and 3/4ths of it is still covered with dense jungle - one side is cleared - It took everything I had to get to the top, but I did it!
I want to know more about Tikal - anything good that you experienced while there?
