New rule for capitals after colons just dropped!

CMOS18: Capitalize the first word after the colon whenever the colon introduces one or more complete sentences, because readers didn't understand our old rule.

me: [Grumpily hitting ctrl-F-: and discovering that I have 287 colons.]

this new CMOS18 thing of capitalizing after a colon when it's a complete sentence is really doing my head in

(so many things are doing my head in that I'm allowing myself to complain about the most trivial one)

Chicago style no longer requires place of publication in citations. Authors: If you put these in your citations, a copyeditor needs to take them out manually, so if you read this, please be a champ and skip them the first time around.

Do you use “peruse” to mean “scan” or “read quickly”? If so, Chicago 18 wants you to peruse its Glossary of problematic words and phrases (5.254). There you will find that “peruse” means “to read with great care” and that it shouldn’t be deployed as a fancy synonym for “read.”

CMOS— The Chicago Manual of Style, AKA Chicago Style.
A Style guide used by publishers, journals, and companies worldwide.
In 2024, the 18th edition came out, and the abbreviation is often coupled with the edition number for clarity (CMOS18/CMOS17).

Depends on the style manual! Chicago says you can do it (CMOS18 8.155, 8.7)! So this is legit:

CMoS18 usage question for my Bluesky humanities author braintrust: in notes/bib format, if I give author and title in the text, do I also need the (apparently redundant) note that consists of... only note and title? Eg:

Pat Smith's _A Book: A Subtitle_ claims that x.[1]

[1] Smith, _A Book_.

Editors! I need some CMoS help, but I don't have CMoS18 yet.
How are we styling the titles of regular newspaper columns? Quotes, italics, or just initial-capped?

Also, am I right in assuming the titles of Substack newsletters are treated like the titles of blogs, i.e., italicized?

Happily capping complete sentences after colons. Thanks, CMOS18.

I just discovered another departure from the 17th edition #ChicagoManualOfStyle. Scholastic Grades! I'm glad this didn't come up for me after the 18th came out. Here's an example:

#CMOS17: I mostly got Cs and Bs in high school.

#CMOS18: In college, I got mostly A's.

True facts. #AmEditing 🎓

Not only is "utilize" most often used incorrectly, this try hard word gets flagged as AI writing! "Use" is enough, though definitions vary; for precision, say what you mean:
