#BookWorld
Just heard that my work is now featured on BC BookWorld, Canada's largest-circulation independent publication about books. Glad to hear it given that Canada has an ongoing issue where it likes to pretend translators/translated literature is not a part of CanLit...

I’ll be hurting my own feelings reading books that have no business hurting me like that.

Thread, and a bookworld story I earnestly hope is true.
sorry--I shouldn't even have been checking Bluesky before, since it's Yom Kippur (which it still is, but it's nearly over so I'm cheating)(and feeling guilty about cheating, how very Jewish of me).

Anyway, apologies because I got this second-hand, so the details are hazy.

In the bookworld as it is, even new work by authors I’ve liked can cause an eyebrow or two to rise when I read the hyperbole attached to their promotion. One friend calls it ‘Internetspeak’ … the need to be REALLY big, wildly enraptured, in a blurb or hype, or it is almost a pan.

My splendid translator in France, Mikael Cabon, asked me to support an urgent campaign, launching today, opposing AI being used instead of people. I do so willingly, and feel same on behalf of audiobook readers and bookworld artists. I hope readers worldwide will show their agreement.

Jack Spratt, who Thursday helps out in BookWorld, was complaining about how he was supposed to be a Raymond Chandler type, iirc

The NURSERY CRIMES books were fantastic, btw

"C is for Corry" - how cool is that? Thanks to Beverley at BC Bookworld for the thoughtful review at bcbooklook.com/j-c-corry/ and the cover notice at bcbooklook.com

Just #finished & enjoyed Lara Mimosa Montes’s The Time of the Novel (Wendy’s Subway 2025). What if Alice was a bookworld precariat and Wonderland was given a Kmart realist remodel. “It was like the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog and never stopped.”

We had a few, and they all closed. I really miss Bookworld the most. The selections of books were incredible. Now, I find them at dept stores or online. It's just not the same.

things feel crap so this good bookworld news is heartening:
- 2022 saw local fiction sales improve
- 2023 looks like "the annus mirabilis of NZ fiction”
- It's been an exceptional year for debut novels!
- NZ general fiction is up "a phenomenal 130 percent" in value www.newsroom.co.nz/readingroom/...
Nice piece by Allen & Unwin's Michelle Hurley on the rise and rise of NZ fiction, something A & U have been at least partially responsible for. www.newsroom.co.nz/readingroom/...

If you're talking about the New Universe where The Pitt took place, that's totally plausible. I forget whether it was Starbrand or the powered armor book, but like a panel in the first few pages someone mentioned Scarecrow and Mrs. King. The bookworld was "ours."

📚 Jill Yonit Goldberg lands the BC BookWorld cover for her debut After We Drowned - a dark, razor-sharp Southern Gothic set in 1980s Louisiana. Masculinity, oil rigs, and murky paths to manhood. Out now with Anvil Press.

Repped by Carolyn Forde.

Congrats, Jill!
