#Abberton #EWT walking back to centre, saw a flock of small birds, mostly blue tits and long-tailed tits, then I saw the goldcrests just feeding all around me, magical. Wouldn't say they came close but this photo was taken with my phone! #essexBirding

Loads. I am fairly sure they should be ringed but the rules are vague and certainly unenforceable. Loads in East Anglia too - nb I still dont buy the Abberton canvasback narrative- stating lack of ring is not evidence

Abberton Res is quiet at the moment, could do with the water level rising a bit as it's all a bit dry. However, the aythya flocks kept me entertained today & found at least 7 Scaup amongst the Tufteds, plus a ringed Tufted & a good hybrid. Little Stint was best of the rest #essexbirding

I am allowed - my ancestors on my dad's side are all from Essex! So yes, it is a great county! It was our first visit to Abberton, and we liked it very much. We went to Fingringhoe Wick earlier in the year and were very excited to hear Nightingales and Turtle Doves.

Drew a blank while searching suitable woodland sites in Colchester area that might reveal some of the crossbills that keep teasing with their intermittent flyovers.
Followed this with a brief visit to Abberton Res.

Aside from Causeway closure & low water levels, Abberton had a Marsh Harrier, lots of Pintails, at least 1 Ruff, Redshank, Peregrine, Goldcrests, Golden Plovers, Black-tailed Godwits and usual ducks, egrets, cormorants, grebes etc. Always worth a look #essexbirding

Lapwing at Abberton 04/10/25. Calling this ‘Alone Time’. They just look like they want to be left alone for a bit. Looks like me when I’m a bit too socially stimulated 😂😂

Unexpected surprise encountering a Ruddy Duck distantly at Abberton Reservoir yesterday during a work team away day! I wonder whether this is the same bird that was in Lowestoft a couple of weeks ago? Was hard to pick out in the masses of wildfowl and Coot. #EssexBirding

Here’s a really nice movement of a Cetti’s Warbler last year. Ringed by us at Abberton Res, Essex on 14 July, then caught again at Leighton Moss, Lancashire on 9 November. 354 km NW. A top example of juvenile female Cetti’s dispersal, right to edge of range.
