The 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun as observed by
David Rittenhouse. His observations of Venus’s atmosphere are the pyramid shape in Fig 2. The gap in observations is when he fainted from excitement/exhaustion.
Engraving in my 1789 copy of Transactions of the American Philosophical Society.

19 December is also the day in 1783 that William Pitt (Jr) became Prime Minister of Great Britain. After Paine fled to France in 1792, the Pitt government tried and convicted Paine in absentia primarily for the impact of Paine’s Rights of Man that opposed the idea of hereditary government.

Last week was a big week for CECS at York! We launched our #18thCentury (a very long one) art wall at our new home in Heslington Hall, with help from the Univ of York’s art curator @helenacoxcurator.bsky.social. York’s VC Charlie Jeffery joined us to toast our wall and cut a festive red ribbon.
