A gorgeously pagan aquamanilia, ewer, used to wash hands before dining or celebrating the mass(!?), c. 1220-1230, Hildesheim, now in Rijksmuseum. Recalling depictions of Rhea or Cybele. #ClassicsBluesky

Adaptations of ancient literature I’d like more than another Odyssey:
- Euripides’s Helen
- Euripides’s Iphigenia Among the Taureans

Io: “By whose hand will he be stripped of his despotic scepter?”

Prometheus: “By his own hand, thanks to his mindless contrivances.”

🦒 Modern art? Nope, these are charred scroll fragments that were part of a gift of several scrolls that King Ferdinand of Naples had sent to George IV in England in exchange for a royal giraffe for his private zoo.

No disrespect meant to Allen or Greenough, btw. Love them too.

Anyone want to shout out a favorite 19th c. professor?

Really appreciated the opportunity to discuss linear reading, explicit reading strategies, & my favorite 19th c. professor William Gardner Hale at the #LatinPedagogyWorkshop

33 And if a foreigner comes to dwell among you in your land, do not oppress him: 34 the foreigner who has come to you shall be as one who has been born from your land among you, and you shall love him as yourself, since you were foreigners in Egypt

(LXX Lev. 19:33-34)

He [i.e. Brutus] was the first in this country to show that no one is a private citizen when it comes to defending the liberty of citizens.

primusque in hac civitate docuit in conservanda civium libertate esse privatum neminem.

This review by Ruth Scodel! She cautiously recommends the new accessible history on Homer's world, but minces no words in warning about certain inaccuracies.

Here I look at Alexander's approach to religion (+ myth) as a "polycentral strategy." Post-Granikos, Alexander increasingly began to center his religious actions on & references to WHERE he was, rather than send back "home" to Macedonia and Greece.
