“I took the liberty of removing your weapon, Rosco, and all the silver you had in your pockets, including that little religious bauble.” I saw him glance up the dark shaft, then he brought his eyes to fall upon me one last time. “Time is short. So, I leave you with nothing. How cruel!” Again, his laughter bounced around the cave. Through hooded, weary eyes I watched Noah rise up in the air, floating high in the shaft but still visible within the reach of the fire light. “I will not leave you with nothing Rosco,” his voice floated down from the dark as he continued to rise. “I do want to give you a fighting chance. Although, by the looks of you I doubt there is much fight left inside and it will diminish even more in the total darkness of this underworld.” ~from the novel Weathervane, by Ross McDermott

His words caught my attention. I jerked my head at their sound and stared at him directly. “Does that include you? Are you not of his ilk?” He looked struck by my words and again I saw his face flicker through varied emotions, coming to rest in a state of bliss, and washing me in warmth. Before my eyes his face became flush and full, rounded rosy cheeks and plump, moist lips replaced the sunken hollows and strings of liver that framed his fangs. His eyes swirled and melted from black to dazzling blue, sapphires twinkling beneath his straight-lined brows . He was suddenly beautiful, ethereal to the point where he was difficult to view in his entirety. To see the eyes, and only the eyes, the slope of his nose, and only his nose, the subtle pout of his lips, and only his lips: these features mesmerized in isolation, but to see the length of the figure that now stood before me was overwhelming to all senses. ~excerpt from the novel Weathervane - a tale of ancient evil in the wilds of the west. by Ross McDermott

We moved back onto the main trail where we had left our horses. Though Sandy’s horse, a small Palomino whose golden coat glowed in the clearness of the night, stood where it had been, my horse, Mr. Andrews, was nowhere in sight. I double-clicked my tongue and heard the sound carry. Mr. Andrews heard it too. She came meandering out of the trees to walk slowly to where I stood, like we had all the time in the world. It seemed she was in no hurry to go down into that meadow. And I must confess, I felt the same. Mr. Andrews’ inclination was correct, I realized. The hunt we were on would not be concluded by men of the hunt, for unbeknownst to Sandy and his posse, it was we who were the hunted, and death would come to us. I sensed it. Mr. Andrews sensed it. Fine, I guess. Better than individual therapy." Because it's easier to hide. But that I don't say. Aunt Tracy seems to see right through me. "Well, I haven't totally given up on that." Of course she hasn't. "I've been looking at some internal options. Some of the faculty members are licensed—" "No." "What?" She's as startled by the cold certainty in my voice as I am. I freeze. What do I say? I can't tell her why, can't tell her that I don't trust the faculty members, certainly not one-on-one, not now, not since... I'm taking too long to respond. This was a mistake. I shouldn't have mentioned individual therapy. Stupid.

I leaned forward, low in the saddle, keeping my Winchester poised ahead, ready to fire should any fiends appear. I moved with the flow of Mr. Andrews, who seemed determined to give death corrupted a proverbial run for its money. After more than several very long seconds, filled with sudden twists and rapid turns, the haunting voices of that fiendish choir faded and the taunts of Noah fell silent. Just the pounding pace and the soft rumbles of Mr. Andrews’ breaths filled my ears. I took the reins again and steered her back towards the trail. I urged her on, faster, fearing what I’d find when we arrived back at the outpost – if we ever arrived. Our pace was strong and steady. An owl marked our swift passing with a single hoot – questioning who that fool might be riding by in the dark, dead of night. “Gitchya.
