A lot of these difference in regional trends are related to variability in the large-scale atmospheric circulation (e.g., orientation of the jet stream over North America), as well as local ocean warming.

This was also the case well before the hurricane season even started, for example:
Sea surface temperatures in the northern half of the Atlantic Ocean continue to come down from their exceptional peak a year ago.
