Obviously the reddit post is pretty tongue-in-cheek but it's a valid request to have more up-to-date references in puzzles.
I'd argue that plenty of people do this already, though maybe not enough and not in some of the key places where people first encounter cryptics...
There's a discussion on /r/crosswords to come up with some modern #cryptic clues - that aren't targeted at people over the age of 70.

I've made a couple of offerings. TBD if they're even solvable...

Great fun, recommended. I've not actually finished it yet but the clues I've managed are great. Looking forward to getting stuck in again after a good night's kip.

Tutivillus Is Watching You

For medieval scribes, mistakes couldn’t be easily shrugged off, as Tutivillus, the stickler demon, was always looking over their shoulders.

I’m pleased to say that this week I have solved the Listener, the Inquistor, *and* the EV.

Probably an easy week but even so it’s a bit of a milestone for me in terms of my career as a solver, so I’m pretty happy with it.

Just done @henriwords.com puzzle in Unch, and it's wonderful. I don't do a lot of these types of puzzles where some entry is central and a lot of clues reference it. Times never publishes those and I rarely venture into Guardian (often too non-Ximenean). Is there a name for them? Semi-thematics?

I’ve only just started doing the Enigmatic Variations puzzle the last few weeks. This week‘s was great - not too hard but enough to keep my brain busy!
