On 10 Dec, 1941, just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, advanced battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse, known together as Force Z of the Royal Navy, were deployed to repel Japanese advances in the Pacific. (1/4)🧵

10 Dec 1941 // Battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse were sunk by Japanese aircraft in the South China Sea east of Kuantan, Malaya. They were operating without air cover. 840 men died, 327 from Prince of Wales and 513 from Repulse. (Images all from Imperial War Museum.) [1/2]

The Nautilus expedition found the USS Laffey DD-459. Laffey was a Benson class destroyer who served during thr early campaigns in the South Pacific. During the night of of November 13th, she valiantly fought the IJN Hiei at point blank range. She was lost after taking as many as two torpedoes.

Finishing up "The Mighty Moo" by Nathan Canestaro. It is a simple read that was mostly put together with after action reports and a few sailors diaries and letters written home. Its a quick & enjoyable read. Ultimately I wish there were more stories, but the source material is hard to come by.
