I recently did something I almost never do - re-listen to one of my old podcast episodes - and need to issue a disavowal. On Important Cinema Club #323, I am bizarrely dismissive of Hisayasu Satō’s Celluloid Nightmares (aka Re-Wind). I saw it again recently and it’s very good.

The political conviction I hold most strongly - the belief that structures my life - is that the lemonade salesman from Duck Soup deserved everything he got. He was guilty of the worst crime of all, which is that he couldn't hang. He couldn't do bits.

Humblebrag: as @junkfilterpod.bsky.social approaches it's 5th anniversary, the -second- episode of the pod was about Al Goldstein. And on the show @willsloanesq.bsky.social and I discussed Curtis Sliwa, who is featured prominently in the documentary about Goldstein "Screwed"

Best movies of 1989? Great question. Obviously Do the Right Thing. Then there's Crimes & Misdemeanors, Roger & Me, The Killer, Les Sièges de l'Alcazar... oh, Batman, of course... let's see, Cyborg, Pedicab Driver... Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects and Hisayasu Satō's Muscle for certain moods...

The only justice in war criminal Dick Cheney's death is that he died knowing that a man far stupider than him stole everything he wished he could have stolen, and did so with zero guile, preparation, or thought.

Love this essay by @esmesays.bsky.social on a topic that gave me much cause for thought and questioning while writing my Ed Wood book

Brooklynites: with SNAP benefits expiring as of today, here are two ways you can help feed neighbors: donate to CHiPS, the food pantry/ women's shelter in Park Slope: www.chipsonline.org. Or leave food in the community fridge on 6th Street between 4th and 5th avenues, next to the Postmark Cafe.

Everyone always says "I can't people people pick up the phone for Isaac Chotiner!" and "Wow, if Isaac Chotiner tried to interview me I would run!" and then you read his interviews and the questions that trip people up are "Could you explain?" and "What do you mean by that?"
