The problem is, the hype of AI is always so clearly manufactured. It’s sold as essential but mysteriously so — rarely is it portrayed as making life better; it’s sold as doing things WE want to keep doing. We want it to inventory our fridge and detect cancer, not make music and replace us at work.

I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

never occurred to me to stop listening to the words and instead recognise the BEHAVIOUR.
homoquartz Follow i've warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since i learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises. as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. it's just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we're small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, "i'm not here to hurt you. here's something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we're on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. i'm being light-hearted and non-threatening right now." small talk isn't to get to know a person. it's just a greeting to affirm you're buddies in the universe. i am motivated by wanting the other person to know i am friendly, so i have gotten pretty decent at small talk when i used to hate it. the owl shit When I was a kid and would go hiking with my dad and sibling on vacation, every time we would pass another group, my dad would do the smile and nod and "hey". And then after we'd turned a corner, he would say more quietly, "I must make friendly social noises so they do not eat my young" and my sib and I would crack up laughing. Gotta remember that we're mammals under it all.

Got shanghaied into a very-much last-minute trip to the beach yesterday with my cousins, three hours north of Manila

Anvaya Cove in Subic Bay, Pampanga, Philippines. Pristine sand, beach chaies and umbrellas, placid shore, random soggy old white guy lounging in a deck chair. The first of a 2-for-1 frozen margarita Happy Hour deal at the beach. In the foreground is said frozen margarita which is bright yellow with a dried lemon on top, sitting on a deck rable. In the background, the beach. Sunset in Anvaya Cove, around 6 pm. The deep orange sun is barely peeking through the clouds behind the beach umbrellas. It'a gorgeous. This morning, myself lounging at the pool. Plus points for there being no sand to deal with. Shot is of my legs, crossed and stretched out on a deck chair, with my painted pink toes. Beyond my legs, the pool and then the foyer of the clubhouse.
