i don't know that art is something meant to be considered "consistent." what it means to the artist at any given point during creation vs. what it means to audience at any given point during experiencing is all so ephemeral it can't possibly be measured accurately if at all.

outside of the realm of people self-censoring for pragmatic reasons i.e. not swearing in front of kids, i find people who use phrases analogous to swearing that are not swearing (shut the front door, what the fudge, etc) to be treading into territory of stolen valor for us, the unrepentant swearers
