BTO Archives hold a range of material relating to the work and history of BTO and UK ornithology, plus personal papers and photographic material from key figures in ornithology and bird photography. 🐦 This includes Ronald M. Garnett’s notebooks & archives of the Reverend Maurice Bird (1857–1924).

Emma Turner (1867-1940) was a pioneering bird photographer, and the only woman to put her name to a letter published in The Times announcing the formation of the BTO in July 1933.

GBW data has been used in many scientific papers over the past 30 years.

Blackcaps now frequently overwinter in the UK. A paper published in 2015, using GBW data, connected the provision of winter food to both behavioural & phenotypical changes. Read more at bit.ly/WileyGBW

Did you know our BTO HQ in Thetford was once a Benedictine monastery founded in King Canute’s time (1016-1035)? The site was then taken over by Benedictine Nuns & was run as a Nunnery until 1537. The oldest existing remains here date back to the late 12th century.

From one of the largest, to the smallest birds we ringed today! Nice to ring with other people, learning new and sharing skills. All birds ringed under @btobirds.bsky.social licence, with @hughhanmer.bsky.social #BirdRinging
Song Thrush being held safely having been ringed. Song Thrush is a brown bird with a large black eye and dark beak. The throat is tinged with pale orange and the breast is white with brown arrowhead shapes feathers. The legs and feet are pink, and a small silver coloured ring is visible on one of the legs. It is held in the left hand, with the head between the middle and index fingers. The remaining fingers form a cage around the body to prevent flapping. A tiny Goldcrest ready for release after being ringed. The Goldcrest is a small browny green coloured bird, with a bright yellow crest at the top of the head, bordered by black. It has a black eye and beak. The expression is slightly sad looking (this is natural). It is held securely by the legs. In the background, there are various bits of ringing equipment, including pliers for attaching rings (with red and pink handles), rulers for measuring wing length and digital scales and pots of various sizes for weighing. Worrying reports of bird flu (avian influenza) are coming in, including an outbreak in Whooper Swans in the Fens. Other waterbirds are also being affected, and cases are rising.
