The British indie band Pulp will play at the Adelaide festival in February after initially pulling out of the event in protest at the cancellation of Palestinian writer Randa Abdel-Fattah.
The band issued a statement on social media on Thursday night announcing that they would “honour our invitation to perform in Adelaide on 27 February” after the festival organisers performed a u-turn, apologised to Abdel-Fattah for her treatment, and invited her to speak at next year’s event. I’ve worked in legislative scrutiny for two governments, and on many law reform submissions, and - in news that should surprise no-one - rushing through legislation is never a good idea. Human rights-focused laws are particularly fraught in Australia because we have no Cth Human Rights Act. 1/

As the government brings its new hate laws to parliament, it’s worth remembering past attempts suggest legislation used to outlaw political groups have been neither wise nor necessary
Australia’s history of banning political groups gives pause for thought as to whether we really want to go down this route again.
During the first world war, the Unlawful Associations Act 1916 was enacted and used to ban a group called Industrial Workers of the World. Membership was made a criminal offence. Members could also be deported if they were not British subjects born in Australia.

People shouldn't be sad that Adelaide Writers Week was cancelled, they should be proud that the people the event was actually about stood together and said "enough of this perfidious bullshit".

Gotta say, the cancellation of Adelaide Writers' Week gives me some hope for Australia's ability to navigate this.
A great loss for the literary community, but writers/thinkers/audiences aren't going to stand for the bullying and pressure.
Unclear when the politicians are going to figure it out.
