BERLIN, Feb. 8.-The wide- spread criticism that Chancellor Adolf Hitler's press gag law evoked in the German press induced him to receive the editors of some of the leading papers today to appease their apprehensions that no more criticism regarding Cabinet meas- ures would be permitted. The Chancellor declared that neither he nor the Cabinet as a whole believed the press ought to be gagged. He said that none of the papers represented by the editors confronting him had been suppressed as frequently as his own papers in the past. Heer Hitler emphasized, however, that the government had the right to demand that objective criticism should be free of personal Vilification and that new men in office should at least receive the benefit of the assumption that they wished to do their best for the nation. This 1934 NYT article about a group of 75 Nazis in New Jersey getting the crap kicked out of them by 1000 “anti-Nazis” is no laughing matter and the writing is not highly entertaining.

J., May 21.-A vicious attack upon seventy-five members of Friends of 'the New Germany as they arrived dressed in their blue uniforms to attend a Nazi meeting here tonight developed into a riot that lasted an hour and a half. More than fifteen persons were injured, two of them being taken to hospitals. Thirty-five were arrested. The riot eventually involved more than 1,000 persons and was put under control only after three squads of Newark police reserves aug- mented the local forces. The po- lice used their nightsticks and the invading anti-Nazis utilized brick-bats, broomsticks, rocks and stench bombs. Hundreds Greet Arrivals. The trouble started when two buses containing a New York delegation of Nazis dressed in light blue shirts, blue trousers and puttees drove up in front of the hall to attend the meeting being held by the local group of Friends of the New Germany. As the buses ar-rived, several hundred persons were gathered in the street. As soon as the first Nazi alighted a group of men in two automobiles pulled up alongside and launched the attack. This was the cue for a general free-for-all fight and the extra detail of Irvington police were unable to cope with it. As the Nazis piled out of the buses to enter the combat they were pounced upon by the invaders. Fists swung right and left, missiles flew and men, grappling in individual contests, rolled on the street. When the Newark reserves arrived the fighting was at its height.
