Unfortunately, that's not surprising. Brooks has a large immigrant community working in the meat packing plant and the racism spreads beyond the town's boundaries. Add this to the guy in Lloydminster with Nazi and Confederate flags and guns and that's Alberta. Always has been.

Technically it’s hearing the people with the phones, but seeing them, too.

Less so than what might actually be playing, cellphones have ruined the experience for me. Even more than the cost, I think.

It also doesn’t help that people who make up nonsense, axiomatically, don’t have to follow any rules or norms of logic or coherency. So they can have an easier time of playing to people’s natural fears, hopes, expectations, or whatever.

And of course it doesn’t help that gaining an audience to accept any kind of nonsense is now merely a question of scale. Thanks to the web, that scale is practically limitless.

I think a big part of the problem is that somewhere along the way we confused popular for correct. We’ve lost the notion that it’s perfectly acceptable to, even preferable, let people know they’re simply in error. Instead, we’ve elevated “wrong” to mean just one of many opinions.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but if an organization can’t exist without gambling revenue, then it’s ok it doesn’t exist.

It would be the perfect place for transitional homeless housing mixed with affordable units, a community kitchen, and social program offices

It's a shame, but if they can turn the area into something like some much needed housing (not another condo tower), it would at least be a positive to come out of something sad.
