This literally took months >__< I've hit a point where I don't know how to fix the issues I see, which means I've spent way too long on it

Man, I wish I knew programming patterns back when I first tried making games

It's nice to know where stuff goes, and how to conceptually split responsibilities. Hitlag goes here! Manager calls it here!

Back then, I'd put it all in 3 nested functions. And I'd quit when I couldn't access that scope

Making an action RPG is...a lot. Plenty of architecture.

Today I fixed bugs with occlusion to prevent the player from passing through enemies. I had to restructure a separate player base for this. Then I started on basic gamefeel like hitlag and hitbounce. Look at how thrilled I am.

Working on #gamedev again today

It's been a while so I have to figure out what I was even doing😂which is honestly nice, gives me a chance to reappraise the task direction

New track, first one in a while, and first one I'm posting from FL studio

I had a tutor for years but I still couldn't write a single song I liked. I felt like, if I was paying someone to help me learn for so long, I should be able to complete ONE song.

I wish I had time to work on my game today

After doing so much art the past week, my dev motivation meter is overflowing

But today I worked late on my dissertation

Anyone else a painfully slow artist?

I spend too long on my #art, so I'm learning to draw faster. Here's two 1.5-hour sketches I threw together. I don't know how to feel.

It's hard letting go of fixing things just to meet a fake deadline. Learning that emotional skill feels invisible. #sketch #wip

Hot take: I think most people still draw the #Frieren head wrong.

I've mostly seen tilted up 3/4ths perspective. The thing is, no version of that perspective would show so much underside of the jaw.

Here's my attempt at drawing an ACTUAL full tilt Frieren head.

A little #gamedev #animation this weekend

The rough part was standardizing the size+time units of...everything, so that the animation is a viable test for a mid-range, mid-timed attack char

Painting lighting is one thing, though I think I kinda get it. But deciding where the light comes from is SUCH a decision

still spending way too much time on a single piece🤓but...I'm telling myself that I'm training to draw pull art for my game🤏

I wasted my time detailing something no one will see.

I'm happy with her face details, but no one's gonna notice with the framing of the full painting! Augh! I'm just trying to remind myself that this is how you learn.

Okay so

I tested my methods by refining a bluebiscuits-style rough head sketch. It's decent for something I threw together quickly, besides the wonky anatomy and hair

But I lost some of the character of the original? Is this just how it is?

The past few days I've been practicing drawing heads from any angle quickly, based on a bluebiscuits tutorial.

Today, I pushed the method a bit and had some fun with it.

Help?

I've seen other (much better) anime artists use the fill tool pretty effectively. But whenever I use it, I spend a lot of time manually filling in space.

What am I doing wrong?

More quick head studies

This method (from bluebiscuits) feels really good and intuitive, but I'm not sure how it connects to my existing workflow...

Tomorrow I might try drawing just one head to test it out.

I've been feeling more confident with anime faces and color, so I tried to redraw the head+hair of an older work. Did I improve?

Learning #digitalart, and it's surprising how much rendering feels like only manual work.

I like learning about the physics of light and how to apply that in painting, and I like the meditative aspect of sitting down and working on it...but I just don't have the time!

#gamedev designing today, and I'm stumped.

Many games have a suite of features like waypoints, healing stations, farming spots, "home base". I feel like they're one layer above "press A to interact", but still one step closer to code than lore.

What are these...called? Like, game loop systems?

Another night of #gamedev.

It's tough, it's a long road to the basic vision of the project. I'm making a JRPG because I wanted to learn what goes into one for fun, to take a break from the #phd.

Not much to share yet except "I'm working on this". woo~

#gamedev is my first experience with software development beyond...for loops. Not even academics really use dev patterns in their code. Well, not the ones I work with, afaik.

It's way more interesting to learn about stuff like design by contract when it's actively resolving my confusion.
