I honestly don’t know if this is 1:1 applicable, but I think it’s relevant that the Luddites didn’t “smash the machines” because they were being replaced, or they feared the machines.
They did it because the machines let the companies make WAY more money, yet the Luddites’ wages weren’t increasing.

If 25% of the population believed that a creature called ‘Glonzo’ caused high power prices by chewing through transmission lines, any competent politician would be negligent in not trying to find a way to exploit this. This doesn’t mean that these people wouldn’t be fucking morons.
