No one is required to follow The Rule, to know The Rule, or even to think that The Rule is a good idea. This is a one-way promise, or covenant. In other words, the developers are saying: "We will treat you this way regardless of how you treat us."

and unlike what the powers that be might tell you, you can too become self reliant for extremely cheap. all you need is 50 bucks so you can buy some old office computer. you don't even need something good. as long as it can open videos and play music and connect to the web you're set
i'm actually excited to quit streaming altogether and become self reliant. the more i think about the more i realize how horrible subscriptions are. they get you in with a promise, make it a great deal and keep it good just long enough to keep you reliant on it. then you think it's your only option

culturally and linguistically i feel like “now” is about 3 minutes thick. in practice (and given my attention span) i feel like “now” is closer to 5 seconds thick.

when i’m really in the zone of a rhythm or action game, “now” becomes thinner, in the order of milliseconds.

the most annoying part to me about sd cards is not just that they fail, but that they fail catastrophically and without warning. i had a few hdd’s die on me and the SMART alerts gave me enough time to run ddrescue and get all my data off of them. but sd cards just explode

i assume the problem of vergence-accommodation conflict in VR (TIL that term) will not get fixed until we get some crazy adaptive active optics OR we manage to cram a whole lightfield in there rather than a flat display. but i’m curious what things we’re trying today to get around that

the spanish word for hand is “mano”, so “manipulation” is very close etymologically to “handling” even though they are very far apart semantically

but it kinda makes sense right? your hands are the most immediate way to effect change upon the world, whether that’s a positive or a negative change

I don't like how the word "nuanced" became synonymous with "finding a middle ground" between "extremes"

it's possible to have a nuanced opinion, and yet also firmly stand within one of the extremes
"Surely there's a middle ground here?" The CEO of Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead says people "jump to extreme takes" when debating generative AI, and that there needs to be more nuance in the discussion.
