these are small things in the moments that we share with people. in this case it's something that's not really my thing. but to him it's my thing. what's stayed with him is such a tiny fragment of who i am and what i care about. but it is still a fragment of who i am and what i care about

anyway if you're ever in a position where you're likely to say "they never knew how much that meant to me", please do your best to make sure they do know. before that becomes true

it is more important to read books you actually enjoy reading than books that are Literature

see i'm with you except that it's also worse than useless for code. i feel exactly this same way about using it for code, and as someone who is also a creative it makes me sad to see codes used as an opening concession like this.

while I acknowledge that LLMs do have some uses for stuff like “producing code with knowledgeable human supervision,” this perfectly reflects how I feel about using it for my own creative work

in my experience llms suck pretty hard at anything other than “20-line python script that i could’ve written from scratch faster than i could’ve described it in conversation”

and writing and debugging regexes IS a ton of fun!!!!

closely adjacent to "my moral compass is whatever the law says" is "my moral compass is whatever most people do"

"is it normal to—" why would it matter whether it's normal or not. is it beneficial? is it harmful? do you want it?

i wish there was a similar thing for slow motion video where it would capture at 240fps by default but drop to 120 or 60 fps if my recording length exceeds a few seconds. specifically for really quick spur-of-the-moment recordings of my cats doing random shit
unicodepepper.bsky.social
so the ios timelapse feature works by first capturing at 2fps, and then at the 10-minute mark dropping every other frame to go down to 1 fps, which happens again every time the recording duration doubles (so the final video is always less than 2x10x60=1,200 frames, or 40 seconds long)

yeah I built an AI that hangs out on your porch and drinks a six pack for you so you can write regexes at work

the only flaw i believe it has is that it’s pretty unbalanced and easy to cheese. but a) you don’t know that when you’re 12, which is the target demographic and b) it was trying something new so i’ll give it a pass

sonic battle for the gameboy advance is actually so goated:

- local multi-console multiplayer
- large roster
- quirky and unique gameplay mechanics
- awesome pixel art
- pushing the gba to its limits with pseudo-3d graphics
- rpg story mode

i used a bracketed tournament to decide that sonic battle is my favorite sonic game ever.

but bracketed tournaments only work for choosing a “best” if the transitive property applies, so if there is a case where i’d pick A over B and B over C but i’d rather pick C over A, the result is invalid

but these don’t cancel 1:1 which is why we had the whole gamma correction thing that to this day i still can’t fully wrap my head around
unicodepepper.bsky.social
so we like having higher resolution at lower brightness and don’t care that much about precision at higher brightness.

the quirky thing is that cathode ray tubes do pretty much the opposite thing - brightness changes when the voltage is too low are barely noticeable, and the curve is reversed
graph. x axis is input voltage from 0 to 100 percent. y axis is brightness from 0 to 100 percent. the curve starts horizontal from zero then curves up like a parabola
unicodepepper.bsky.social
the same happens to your eyes. the difference in perceived brightness between 1 light bulb and 2 lightbulbs is the same as between 100 and 200, and going from 100 to 101 is barely noticeable

okay decibels uhhhhh

so going from 1 person screaming to 2 people screaming is the same perceived loudness difference as going from 10 people to 20 people. that’s why decibels are logarithmic.
