This is ✨Senator Kim Pate✨

Canada's champion for Basic Income in Parliament

She just gave one of the most iconic speeches ever
- it's cheaper than poverty
- encourages work and entrepreneurs
- cuts crime and helps victims of abuse

S. Korea has doubled the budget for its massive universal basic income experiment, increasing the number of rural counties included in it from 7 to 12, and relieving counties of more of the cost. As a result, the number of participants in the 2-yr UBI pilot will go from ~250k to near 400,000 people.

If AI succeeds, we need universal basic income, and if AI fails, we need universal basic income. Also, we should have implemented UBI decades ago when working class incomes first decoupled from productivity growth.
So if AI succeeds loads of people lose their jobs as they're replaced by AI, and if AI fails, loads of people lose their jobs as the economy crashes?
It’s amazing how this story has gone from 0 to 60 in UK press. There’s been no mainstream coverage to date but this morning the story is leading BBC News site & bulletins.

Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend has been paying every resident a yearly income since the 1980s. We spoke with 2 of its fiercest defenders.

Dude, me and a whole lot of other Liberal voters are running out of patience, as well as food, clothing, and heat.

House us, and give us a national disability Support Program. Or better yet, a LIVABLE UBI. Canada would again be the envy of the world.

"Tax cuts are not what motivates investors or entrepreneurs, they’re not what creates jobs, and they undermine the things that do: broad economic stability and strong consumer demand... [Universal Basic Income] creates reliable consumer demand beyond subsistence spending."

Canada should do UBI.

UBI Works founder @floydmarinescu.bsky.social's op-ed in The Star

As a entrepreneur, Floyd knows corporate tax cuts aren't what drive innovation and entrepreneurship — certainty, consumer demand, and economic security do. That's what Basic Income delivers.
Why Canada’s proposed corporate tax relief is not the answer

AI will destroy more jobs than it creates.

That’s why Geoffrey Hinton, Nobel Laureate and 'Godfather of AI' says a basic income may be necessary.

sharing AI's gains through dividends means economic security for all, not just the few

It's not that radical
As expected, many still just parrot the same tired tropes instead responding to these points head on in good faith.

An income floor is hyper-capital efficient and costs less than what we're spending today on poverty.

UBI dividends give us a stake in natural & publicly created common wealth.

Most books about basic income / Guaranteed Livable Income are written by academics. This one is not, and it is free on Apple Books and Leanpub.

Many types of basic income already work today successfully.

Alaska's UBI dividend is being called on as a model for Alberta and US sovereign wealth funds.

A guaranteed income floor is just a negative income tax that would save taxpayers money.

By creating AI ministry, I hope Mark Carney did take UBI under serious consideration. It's obvious he himself doesn't plan on re- assigning public service workers, 60,000 of them, to public sectors where AI does not reign yet, but plans to fire them? "Values", eh?
Betting against UBI is betting against AI.

And I wouldn't bet against AI.

This initiative needs to be sped up and put in place ASAP.
Lots of newcomers to basic income learning the truth:

- 0 studies showed major drop in work
- saves taxpayers $ long-run (cheaper than poverty)
- most Canadians benefited from some sort of basic income (CCB, GIS)
- people in AI pretty much all support UBI
- it's not left or right (see Alaska's UBI)

I'm really glad to see this bill advance! Thanks so much to @kpateonthehill.bsky.social for championing it.

I would love to see a bargain struck between @mark-carney.bsky.social and @donvdavies.bsky.social where the NDP agrees to support the budget in exchange for the gov'ts support on Basic Income
