Being able to research from home is awesome. Having someone else research for you is only good if you don't care about understanding the material. And get, there's plenty of stuff where I don't care!

Even coding, the best code I wrote I would write once and then rewrite until it was clean and worked even cleaner.

We had to walk to school in the snow! Uphill! Both ways!

And it's not just learning. it's art, it's reading, it's everything. stuff is too damn easy and ubiquitous and no I'm not an old man yelling at clouds.

This fits nicely into my idea that we've removed too much friction. Some friction is good, it helps you learn and explore. You can solve that somewhat with homework and exercises, but ChatGPT is being used to remove even that.

Oh man, and if you fuck up a speech that you don't have down pat, recovering can be HARD when all you want to do is cry and start over.

I feel for that contestant. Trying to speak to a crowd, on the spot, on a subject that has tons of minefields is a lot harder than writing a simple paper and not sounding like 10 year old. And not to mention you have to make sure you look perfect while doing it too!

But it wasn't English 101, it was from a Junior in the major!

Going to be a cranky old man for a second: there are similar problems with anti-spoiler culture. An interesting work is not about the twists or the machinations of the plot or how it ends. There is a small joy in first time reading, but acting like that is the purpose of a work is so limiting.

Then again, when all anyone has is their feet, the world becomes a tiny, insular, impoverished place. The modern world gives us great tools and resources!

And yet, when I drive everywhere the idea of walking half an hour to get somewhere feels like a horrible imposition. Having to deal with bus schedules feels like a chore. Thinking about what chores to do first because the right order will save hours of travel time is suddenly obnoxious busywork.

When I drive everywhere I barely understand the geography around me. When I walk, take the bus, or bike? I suddenly see how areas interact, find new places and explore things I never knew existed. The same is true with entertainment and learning.

Pushing yourself through any sort of barrier feels agonizing to so many people. And those barriers wasn't unreasonable to remove. They were removed because they're sometimes painful! But at the same time actually learning and growing requires something to push on.
