Off coastal #Argentina Kelp Gulls have developed the habit of eating the skin off the backs of Southern Right Whales. I wonder if whales resting on their backs (like this one) or in the yoga pose of yesterday's post is a response by the whales to reduce the bites? 🦑🦊🪶

Manx Shearwater recently arrived in the South Atlantic and already well into molt. Seems most places I go the common shearwater is in the opposite hemisphere from which it breeds and not looking their best. 🪶 Off #Argentina #seabirdSaturday

After being declared extinct twice(!), it was on this day in 1948 that the Takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri) was rediscovered again. Thanks to intensive conservation work there are now more than 500. www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/tak...

Black-backed Woodpecker. This woodpecker really likes burns and colonizes them remarkably fast once the flames die out. We haven't had a suitable fire for a few years so now it takes a lot of looking to find this fine bird. Anchorage #Alaska #WoodpeckerWednesday 🪶
