& you too may someday be an acceptable loss

Participating in public life in this country has become akin to driving a car: people die from it every day but it's so normal that they're acceptable losses factored into the calculus of routine bc driving is a requirement of existence at this point, & you are expected to partake in the lottery.

The terrifying thing is that I feel almost as numb to this happening here as I am to it happening anywhere else. 13 years ago I was sobbing so hard during a show that I was kept back from bows. Less than 2 decades later it happens again even closer & yet my emotions are feeble, dulled, resigned.

but like. I expected the outside to move on & return to business as usual immediately. I didn't expect us to do it when it's happened in our own community. When it's not even over. Have we become that numb? But of course, why feel any way in particular about what's normal?

The mayor urging ppl not to cancel their weekend plans for tomorrow even as the shooter remains at large, the fact that a lot of businesses downtown didn't close this evening, the lack of communication to residents... A lot can be said about how inadequate the response has been (& it certainly has),

& of course, in the next two days the rest of the country will forget about it, just like we always do know when it's somebody else.

Knowing it's coming doesn't prepare you for when it arrives.

Also, it sounds like people have figured out which hotel the ICE agents are staying at and are giving them a lovely overnight musical performance with drums and vuvuzelas and so on.

It's clear from the article that ICE is *miserable* here. They're freezing their asses off and being harassed everywhere they go. Property managers aren't allowing them access to rental properties and people know their rights and aren't letting them in.

KEEP IT UP.

Marcos Charles is the acting "executive associate director for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations" and both claims it's untrue that ICE is just grabbing random people, AND tells a story about arresting a guy from Honduras after breaking down a door to find a guy who wasn't there.
