Hands up if you'd be interested in a Sonic Youth #MusicChallenge in 2026 🙌

Thinking February or March for this one, if there's enough interest.

RTs appreciated.

Of course, I couldn't make it through the day without playing my favourite album by that band (or anyone else, for that matter).

Pink Floyd released 'The Endless River' #OnThisDay in 2014.

The band's final album, it largely comprises instrumental and ambient work from The Division Bell sessions two decades earlier.

One for the purists and hardcore fans, it is also a fitting conclusion to the band's story.

Another modern classic on the turntable.

I was going to go for something louder, brasher, rockier after Spirit Of Eden.

But nope. Instead, I opted for the exact opposite.

RIP Mark Hollis, forever and always ❤️🎶

When one of your favourite albums of all time isn't even your favourite album by that band.

From avant-garde jazz to top tier psychedelic rock.

The record cover is the only sunshine in these parts this morning, but the look in David Crosby's eyes says it all.

'If I Could Only Remember My Name' is one of those records which swallows you up for its duration.

Patti Smith's 'Horses' was released #OnThisDay in 1975.

The seminal album combined the emerging rawness of the punk scene with avant-garde experimentations, making for one of the bravest and most unique debuts of the decade.

Perhaps that's best exemplifies on the sprawling 'Birdland'.

Kicking off the record playing week with this absolute beauty.

Karma is the jazz record which most feels like a religious experience - opening my eyes, ears and minds to the wonder that is Pharoah Sanders.

I'll be diving so much deeper next year, but for now, this is on repeat.

It's not a turnaround on the scale of Dark Side Of The Moon, but I do believe my ears needed cleaning when I didn't enjoy Blood On The Tracks on first listen.

It's definitely the most consistent Bob Dylan record I've heard, and that base level is much higher than I realised.

🗣️ Mansun
🎶 Mansun's Only Love Song
🗓️ February 1997

One of the most audacious and ambitious debut albums of the decade could have had pretty much any song up for the accolade here.

But their only love song is also one of their best, and gets the nod today.

💿 Swordfishtrombones
🎶 Shore Leave

The first of four from the album that changed everything.

From beatnik storyteller to master of the weird, wonderful and everything in between.

And this song perfectly sums that up, with that sinister ending.

December is for the great Christmas movies - the classics, the modern favourites, childhood nostalgia et al.

But November, that's for the guilty pleasure that is Hallmark Christmas movies (and other similar networks).

Here's what we've watched, so you don't have to...

Many bands suffered at the hands of the toxic music press in the 90s.

Few were able to make such an impressive comeback two decades later as Slowdive.

Their eponymous 2017 record is revenge served red hot.

Ridiculous it took me this long to read Stuart's autobiography - it's every bit as brilliant as Mogwai's music.

No holds barred, and an absolute treasure trove of youthful music memories - a must read for any music fan.

💿 Spirit

Having enjoyed 12 Dreams... so much, it was only a matter of time before trying out the debut, which seems to even more revered.

Of course, it's with good reason. This is a joy right from the off...

Been making banana cake this morning, and of course the perfect soundtrack to that is one of the most uncompromising sound bands of all time.

Safe to say, the rest of the house was not happy with the noise from 4 minutes onwards...

"He transferred his soul
To his imagination
His atoms were excited
And he glowed in the dark
The boiling boy
Was a victim of confusion
But he had the advantage
Of a cold start heart
Lock up your hats
Lock up your hats"

First week of November Topster.

Plenty of new-to-me jazz, ear blasting Sonic Youth, #Top31DavidBowie research aplenty, and plenty else besides.

Wire could never live up to the critical adoration of their original, post-punk triad of records.

And 1988s 'A Bell Is A Cup Until It Is Struck' is far from Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154 in terms of style.

But as a new wavish, alternative electronic record, it's top dollar.

🗣️ Portishead
🎶 Roads
🗓️ August 1994

One of the most stellar debut albums of the 90s, and still almost entirely unique, even in Portishead's own limited yet incredible discography.

So many highlights too, but Roads will always be my favourite. Words can never do it justice.

💿 Orphans
🎶 Little Drop Of Poison

So many amazing songs from Waits' odds and sods collection, but just the one makes my list.

Turns out this might well have been the first Tom Waits song I heard, as it was in Shrek 2.

Like many, my first Sonic Youth album was Daydream Nation.

It took a long time for any other record of theirs to stick, but 'The Sprawl' made this one an instant favourite.

A relentless sonic coda after Kim Gordon's biting and accusatory vocals, it never fails to provide goosebumps aplenty 👇

The lyric I'm thinking about today:

"In another world, darlin'
In another world
In another time
Got a home on high
Ain't nothing but a stranger in this world
I'm nothing but a stranger in this world
I got a home on high
In another land
So far away"

The Joni Mitchell lyric I'm thinking about today:

"I remember that time you told me
You said, "Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time"
