Pink Moon | Amanda Petrusich (33 1/3)
Been a fair few weeks since I tucked into an entry in this wonderful series, and this was a great one to get through in one sitting last night.
Great insight and questions posed on Drake's life, plus so much good stuff on PM.

Today's song lyric:
"I thought of stories
They told us long ago
Of how the world was a perfume garden
I haven't yet learned to tame the creature there
And that at least I think is something good"

A Big Star cover, Cindy Sharp aches over short lines and delivers one of the most devastating introductions in music history.

Ride | Going Blank Again
2 | Leave Them All Behind
Sacrilege to have this anywhere other than first place perhaps, but that speaks only about how much I love one song more than this behemoth of an opener, the finest in shoegaze music for my money.

🗣️ Mogwai
🎶 Christmas Steps
🗓️ March 1999
The absolutely monstrous Christmas Steps was an absolute revelation live in Leeds, making me love it somehow even more than I already have for years.

💿 Heartattack & Vine
🎶 On The Nickel
Waits wears so many hats well - the carnivalistic madman, the beatnik storyteller, the drunken everyman.
But his sympathetic songs are often amongst his very best!
And this is Waits at his sympathetic best.

The lyric I'm thinking about today:
"I'll leave now, this can't continue
But I forget which door I came through
And I know that the lift can be painfully slow
So I think I'll leave by the window, oh"
Porcupine Tree | Stop Swimming

Ride | Going Blank Again
3 | OX4
One of my favourite album closers of all time, and yet there's still two songs I prefer on the record.
That speaks volumes about just how epic Going Blank Again is.
Nostalgia, longing for home, and a carnivalistic intro all make this song special.

💿 Small Change
🎶 Invitation To The Blues
One of my favourite Waits songs and it's not even my favourite from the quite excellent Small Change.
"So they took the registration, and the car-keys and her shoes
And left her with an invitation to the blues"

🗣️ Catherine Wheel
🎶 Fripp
🗓️ July 1993
One of the most important, meaningful, and most relatable songs I've ever heard in my life, it's effect on me goes far behind words.

It has all the ethereal hallmarks the dreampop legends delivered time and again throughout their illustrious time together, and then some.

Today's David Bowie lyric:
"You're too old to lose it, too young to choose it
And the clock waits so patiently on your song
You walk past a cafe but you don't eat when you've lived too long
Oh, no, no, no, you're a rock 'n' roll suicide"

The lyric I'm thinking about today:
"Strange face, with your eyes
So pale and sincere
Underneath you know well
You have nothing to fear
For the dreams that came to you when so young
Told of a life
Where spring is sprung"

But his death, presumed suicide, is what gives his music weight, credence, and belief.
We trust his despair, we take solace in his pain, and we know that he meant every single haunting lyric.

An absolutely gorgeous track that even at almost 6 minutes long, always flies by.

💿 Rain Dogs
🎶 Jockey Full Of Bourbon
My favourite track from my favourite Tom Waits album - there's ever so slightly higher highs from other records, but the gold star on his finest hour is this.
The first time I heard it, I knew it, and he, was special.

🎶 The Asphalt World
🗓️ October 1994
As with so many artists in the 90s, I'm spoilt for choice with Suede and then some.
She's Not Dead, Whipsnade, We Are The Pigs, Heroin, Filmstar - so many amazing tracks.
But the epic Asphalt World is the ultimate Suede song, for me.

It's likely not the truth, but either way, those distorted cries take a distressing song up another level or three.
