Colnbrook is a small village on an important road. Running Colnbrook One-Place Study & working on website for same.
With all this loose talk about a utopian AI text search in Ancestry, I am forced to remind the public that the old problems remain. Here the errors in the Ancestry catalogue cannot be fixed by some fancy dystopian AI tools. Remember the old computer adage: GARBAGE IN EQUALS GARBAGE OUT. #GenHour

For #OnePlaceWednesday l’m at the same place in Aylesbury starting a new parish -Datchet. (now in Berkshire.) On the lookout for #Colnbrook-OPS people who used adjacent parishes.

This #OnePlaceWednesday I’m working to finish the Banns transcription of Iver the parish next to #Colnbrook-OPS. The study contains one significant Inn & farm in that parish. In the meantime here is a view of Market Square Aylesbury while waiting for @BucksArchives to open #OnePlaceStudies

I’m at the Romany & Traveller event at Chesham Council Offices this afternoon. Do come along. #OnePlaceStudies

Anybody seeing the word Domesday should be reminded that any survey like this is usually followed by confiscation or taxation. Henry VIII had a Military Survey in 1522. The result was Certificate of Musters for the ordinary folk. Colnbrook #OnePlaceStudy has its own entry.

Today, from #OnePlaceStudy of Colnbrook's department of Silver Linings, a new set of maps of Colnbrook. Courtesy of the council as they issue Parking Orders to introduce charges & permits. Reason for parking restrictions? Too many people affording holidays & not parking at Heathrow Airport.

#One-PlaceStudies Ancestry. Oh Dear, what were you thinking! Always look at the film. I had to go to London Archives Catalogue to get the proper reference (DRO/106/A/01/001) The front cover of the register is missing from the film, probably in a half hearted attempt to hide their mistake.

#Colnbrook #One-PlaceStudies After a quiet time on social media, I'm here to report that the Colnbrook OPS website www.colnbrook-ops.co.uk website is now an Open Site, not requiring a login to view the contents. There is still a lot of content to be created.

This little gem came off the shelves today to help Colnbrook #OnePlaceStudy by tracing a family. The Book was produced by WEA Slough & Eton in 1974 and reprinted in 1995. A great example of getting fine detail out of the records for just one year in 127 pages. Something to aspire to achieve.

#OnePlaceStudies Colnbrook-OPS has at least 2 ppl who partook in the fatal meal at Castle Inn when 11 members of Colnbrook Turnpike Trust were accidentally poisoned by ill prepared Turtle Soup on 29 Mar 1773. Wm Burcombe was a Mercer & Draper & Henry Isherwood was brewer in Windsor who owned Inns.

#OnePlaceStudies I have just watched on YouTube a Gresham College lecture on the Pevsner Guides to English Buildings county by county. He describes the buildings with a touch of criticism where deserving. Example Aylesbury's Market Sq: "CLOCK TOWER, 1876 by Brandon, insipid Gothic with a spire."

#OnePlaceStudies Checking the images from an expedition to the archives. All appear to be in focus, so that’s a bonus 😀 These show the attempt to raise the status of Colnbrook by restarting the cattle market in 1833 and using the tolls over the years for paving the High Street and Gas lighting.

#GenHour Today in #Colnbrook #OnePlaceStudy there has been a bit of organising as the records collected at Bucks Archives are checked. The Horton Land Tax is interesting a the Excise Officer's Spelling of names was very poor. I hope they could do sums better!
The Image is just a partial list. 😃

#GenHour Just a quick Advert to say I'll be representing Bucks FHS at the East Surrey History Fair while looking for any excuse to talk about #OnePlaceStudies especially #Colnbrook.

#OnePlaceWednesday I'm looking for Nicholas Brokenshire who turned up in Colnbrook in 1790 to marry the recently widowed Elizabeth Stransom & become Licensee of the King's Arms. Then just as promptly disappear! All the baptisms appear to be from Cornwall or Devon. Has anybody lost a Brokenshire?

You know when a Settlement Order of Easter 1793 provides a glimpse of a totally different world when Hammersmith, London is described as: "... hamlet of Hammersmith in the parish of Fulham in the County of Middx." The satellite image is the same place today. #OnePlaceStudies #History #LocalHistory

Back in @bucksarchives.bsky.social today. Not sure I reserved although the kind archivists will leave something on the table. #OnePlaceStudies #Colnbrook. Come to think about it, Quarter Sessions may be involved. Not only about crime, also the running of Buckinghamshire.

William Talbot of Colnbrook, Labourer is staring at the camera. 6th Feb 1871 he was convicted of stealing wheat and sentenced to one month with hard labour. Description says he is aged 41 and is 5ft 4, with grey eyes. Looking at faces of people in your #OnePlaceStudy can be unsettling.

Back to School and work, holidays are over. Poyle Mills would be operating. The picture shows the Colnbrook Boy's National School. The yard was shared with the girl's school. In foreground the yard is divided from track leading to St Thomas' church behind the school. #OnePlaceStudies #Colnbrook

Old Public Rooms, Colnbrook. From 1855 it was used to distribute payments made by Town Houses Charity to the poor of Colnbrook. The rooms were used when non-conformists became charity trustees & there was a move away of using Inns & Beerhouses for the payouts. #OnePlaceStudies Now a private home.

Signatures in records play an important part in #OnePlaceStudies. Here those in Horton side are in that parish & lived on South side of the street. Langley was on the North. From Colnbrook Town Book dated 1690. There 15 men were running #Colnbrook and where farmers, innkeepers, & shopkeepers

A 1950s Christmas Card from a Colnbrook resident showing a route around all pubs, including Poyle & Longford. Many of the Inns and beer houses like the Swan, Royal Standard, Chequers, Green Man, Catherine Wheel, and others had closed. Merry Christmas to all viewers of Colnbrook #OnePlaceStudy

#OnePlaceStudies #Colnbrook-OPS Brookmead, built in 1934 as a family home for and by Fred Sargeant. Extended over the years to become a guest house then later an Italian Restaurant. Being one to reuse material, the arched window must have been a bit of architectural salvage.
