It comes easier than usual tonight, having a city to work with, though combustible material for a fire is a bit more tricky. Between Whisper’s sharp eyes and Canary’s limitless enthusiasm we do manage it in the end, and by sundown, the six of us are gathered around a healthy blaze, our shadows cast against rotted wallpaper and scuffed marble. I’m glad. Being dolls, we have nothing to eat, and no need for food, but the gathering is good for the soul all the same. This place was probably beautiful once, I think, some grand lobby to something or other, I can see the beauty in the stone occasionally shining through among all the damage and debris. My mind quickly stops wandering, however, when I notice North has pulled out her guitar. “Oh my god!” escapes Canary in eager glee. “Are you gonna play for us!?” “I’m gonna play for me,” North says with a playful little smile. “Okay but can I record though!?” North immediately stiffens. “Why?” “For posterity and shit! To remember!” “Canary…” She’s doing the big eyes now. The big pleading eyes. North caves, every time, and tonight is no exception. “Oh fine.” “Yesss,” Canary giggles, “I swear you’ll forget it’s even here.” And she tosses a small device to the center of the gathering, a half meter or so shy of the fire. It whirs, subtly, and then it goes silent. She’s right. Easy to ignore. But then North strums her first chord, and my attention is elsewhere.
