Presenting the 1000th post at my Patreon!

I've just spent four days and nights on the Indian Pacific train, crossing Australia by rail. It's not the first time I've been aboard this mighty train, but it never fails to be a memorable way to travel. Here are twelve highlights of this latest […]

Every year around this time I send out personalised Christmas card to all my business contacts - editors, PR people, tourism bureaus in various destinations, etc. Partly it's a goodwill gesture, partly it's to remind them of me in order to get work in the […]

Tapping my fingers because one of my clients is holding onto *eight* travel stories that I've been paid for, but they haven't published yet. And there are three more I'll be handing in shortly!

In the old days when it was a problem because they only paid on publication. They now pay when the […]

Since my upgrade to an iPhone XR in 2018 (then later an iPhone 15) I haven't needed a power bank to top up my phone's battery during the day - and I think of myself of using the phone a fair bit, especially when travelling. The continuing presence of them makes me think a lot of people must be […]

It's amazing how often I manage to get ill right at the end of a trip. This time I caught a cold around the second last day on the Indian Pacific train, didn't cause me too much trouble travelling but I'm not feeling great now. Hopefully will pass soon.

God there are some vile people in the LNP, encouraging racism against immigrants because there might be votes in it.

There possibly could be a worthwhile discussion to be had about immigration policy, except it always gets hijacked by these opportunistic racists. They need to be resisted […]

This no-frills Malaysian restaurant out in the burbs looks great. And affordable.

"In an industrial precinct in Melbourne’s south-east, Hanna Md Diah, a former bank worker from Johor in Malaysia, and her husband, Matt Mohamad, a one-time car mechanic, have turned a no-frills lunch spot into a […]

I always say i find it hilarious that anyone thinks i am ‘very into food’ when random uncles back home have elaborate blogs like this: https://johorkaki.blogspot.com/

To be clear, most of my family would also have blogs like this if they bothered to write things down.

This dude’s blog is what […]

Ah that was satisfying - first non-moving shower in six days. (The previous five were taken aboard trains).

Nothing like the excitement of bracing against sudden lurches in the morning when you're trying to wash. :)

Interesting. The population drain from NZ to Australia doesn't look like letting up.

"And it is playing out via immigration trends that suggest unless something changes, New Zealand will be little more than a retirement community for dairy farmers, Lord of the Rings tragics and worn-out All […]

Casually pining at photos from #morocco at the beginning of the year and I stumbled upon this filth.

Apparently I get extra points for consecutive numbers or something.

Funny the things people complain about. Some of the Indian Pacific passengers felt their rooms were too small, but I felt like saying "You're on a train! What do you expect?"

I suspect those huge ocean-going cruises have somehow set rail cruise expectations too high.
