The debate over Medicaid work requirements isn’t going away—and it’s not just a policy disagreement. It’s a real issue with consequences: coverage losses, hospital strain, rising premiums. Would love to hear from others working in health policy or regulation.

Yesterday, I was on Attitude with Arnie Arnesen (www.podomatic.com/podcasts/sta...) to discuss why Medicaid Work Requirements Don't Work, my op ed at the Washington Monthly (washingtonmonthly.com/2025/05/27/m...)

Medicaid work requirements sound like a nudge toward personal responsibility.
But they reduce hospital revenue, raise private premiums, and cut coverage for working people.

This is a feature, not a bug.

Medicaid work requirements don’t just fail.
They weaken hospitals, raise premiums, and hurt the people already working.

"We assume we can have an exploitative, ruthlessly competitive, profit-for-profit's-sake economy, and yet remain a decent and a democratic nation." This Wendell Berry quote lands especially true while reading @brian-goldstone.bsky.social's devastating book on those who are working & homeless.

No one complains about "able-bodied" people qualifying for employer-provided health benefits (which get a substantial government tax subsidy).

Yet, there is criticism of Medicaid covering low-income people who are "able-bodied," most of whom are working.
