I’ve been pretty sold on the idea that Dems should put effort into being a social club as much as a political party in large part because it’s increasingly clear this sort of group ritual is something we need as a society and it’s a lot better if it’s one that had values we actually want to promote

The frame of the headline is actually more helpful for Hegseth than the alternative that I suspect is true: that Hegseth, on finding out survivors were rescued instead of murdered in an operation, demanded his resignation.

kind of interesting to kind of see his thought process. sort of: i want to take on the most rigorous program of study available to me, perhaps without fully engaging with the idea that he was entering into a culture as well as an intellectual tradition?

yeah. sometimes i want to try and get across sort of a basic understanding of how these things work, but ... like ... there is a lot of complexity.

you don't have to know the math, but you have to know what the math means, and that's sometimes hard to get across.
