Low-carbon living & birding in TG42, East Norfolk. Patch 328, finds 302, patch finds 287 (latest PGP). Flight-free for 18 years 😁

Hardcore will never die, but you will.
I think they ‘morph’ a bit with light conditions & viewing proximity (like Sibe Chiffs).

Often dull & grey, sometimes green tones are more apparent (esp in the hand). Recent TG42 bird was very “grey” in the field, greener in the hand.

However, Hume’s always seems less “crisp”.

The cause of the decline - climate change - is ignored & has been for years despite opportunities to communicate it to the public.

Climate-caused reduction of first-year survival is driving the decline & that impacts birds whether they come from a roof or a brick. Hence the data:

Was really hoping this Rough-leg would hang around for a bit. It arrived with the cold polar air and seemed to move on as it warmed up.

Spent several hours searching for it and watching it as they’re a rare bird now. Got to enjoy them while you can…

Maybe it will pop up somewhere

The huge problem that Puffins face is climate change. A massive 93% decline is predicted by 2050.

Yet, I haven’t seen a single reference to this in any reports or comments on Puffin numbers recently.

Which is quite strange 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Be great if Ukraine did that too. 1% show support for Palestine.

And yes, I oppose imperialism and fascism wherever they occur including Putin / Ukraine.

Wheatears are declining in many areas. We’ve noticed it acutely in East Norfolk over the last decade. Wheatears are experiencing climatically induced range contractions e.g. in southern Europe as we warm up.

The refusal (or inability) to see or accept reality may be part of the human condition in a good number of people. The Covid inquiry, the BBC on Gaza and the COP process are the climate crisis in microcosm - full of such examples. Chomsky might say society selects for people who don’t make waves.😁👍

Sudden stratospheric warming has led to the polar vortex collapsing very early (Arctic hot but lots of cold air has come rushing down over Europe). Might bring us some more interesting bits?

Another farce of a COP then.

Huge amounts of CO2 generated annually to talk about reducing CO2 but achieve nothing. Again and again.

Still, it’s been informative to see it said that 1.5 degs was a dream even ten years ago. Let that temper what you hear today about what is possible…

As well as the regular chu-wee call, a Hume’s short call was recorded.

A decent number of thrushes (notably Blackbirds), a few Woodcock, Siskin, Redpoll, Brambling, Whoopers etc.

The sea was quiet with many species conspicuous by their absence (Gannets, divers, auks, waders etc)

First half of Nov saw the total of Dusky Warblers in a mile of home increase by one to at least 12, several Siberian Chiffs & a 2-day Hume’s in the north half of TG42, which along with Sean’s last week takes the TG42 total to 8

Brian Clough scored just under a goal per game in league football. The highest ever in English football. In a league of his own.

Great Grey Shikes are appearing much less frequently as we warm up…

This is what I call a proper Siberian Chiffchaff. Brown & buff with no yellow in supercilium, wing bend or underwing. Any olive tones greatly reduced too. Very dark legs & only a small amount of colour in the bill, which looked all dark in the field. From early Nov. 😁 #norfolkbirding
