At the Alex Pretti memorial this afternoon, people are unfurling four very large banners.

They read, "How many more will ICE murder? How many more funerals? How many more...how many more?"

And a message to all reporters like Matt: these moments are NBC taking advantage of your relative lack of power in the organization and forcing you to be the face of their institutional conservatism. It will harm your career and reputation more than it will theirs.

I'm seeing people mistakenly claim the gun photo was posted before today, but its just how Google sometimes dates images based on the original date of the thread its posted in, not when it was posted. The photo was posted an hour ago in this 5 day old thread

A DHS statement claimed “an individual approached US Border Patrol officers” with “a handgun” in the Alex Pretti shooting incident. A Bellingcat analysis of the footage appears to show that a gun was taken away from where Pretti was situated by an agent just before the first shot was fired.

… YOUR reporting with the goal of misleading, the public then you must report that just as prominently. If you don’t you are enabling the lie.

Every single news organization needs to be able to hold as true two things at once: yes, you must report what the executive says and does because that’s our government whether we like it or not, and yes, if they lie over and over as a way to mislead …

But I came to NBC’s site today expecting them to do it wrong, based on my own personal experience working for them, and in fact they did. Sigh.
