This bit from Mandalore’s interview by J. Barnes is exactly the main design goal of The Black Parade. It is *exactly* what I had in mind. When I first played Thief my first reaction when starting a level was “how am I going to beat THAT?”. And eventually you do!
The sense of being dropped into a large map you then have to figure out yourself with the tools at your disposal feels like the game respects your intelligence compared to constantly worrying you're going to get too bored or lost, so there's extra fulfillment in beating those levels because the solution wasn't always being pointed out to you in obvious ways. Sure, video games are created for you to win, but their ability to immerse you in the situation and not obviously telegraph how they help you is what's kept that appeal so constant and is why fan missions (or campaigns like The Black Parade can become absurdly complex and the fans love them for it.
