There are cultural differences to consider. Let’s also account for neurodivergence. Some crave silence. Some may find it distracting. My students and I enjoy listening to music while we work for that reason. My point is to avoid blanket statements about how students learn best

While it's nice to have quiet while you work, students who are not yet fluent writers don't process the same as fluent writers. There's a reason they talk even as they write.

Limiting their ability to speak while they work can be counter-productive to the goals of the task.

As an adult, I have "tv" work and "silent" work time. I can't effectively read or write complex texts with competing input. But simple tasks are fine. Students may have a different threshold for productivity but I imagine it varies according to the individual

Students benefit from discussion. They develop deeper understanding as they process new information. They also benefit from quiet work sessions. We should provide both.
