on top of everything else it's totally crazy-making that the only way archives will be able to get grants/justify their existence is by presenting themselves as untapped treasure troves of data waiting to be mined by AI.
Historian focusing on early modern book culture here. I am not sure that feeding a private company with all our past handwritings from archives is a solution or a way forward. Google‘s AI studio is a data trap. #skystorians
Gemini’s ability to read handwritten archival documents has importance beyond the humanities. It opens new frontiers for scientific research and collaboration with the humanities.

this rocks and also as an affiliate of an org that had a grant cancelled and now uncancelled, I can tell you it creates massive administrative and financial confusion!!
NEWS: The Institute of Museum & Library Services has restored ALL previously canceled federal grants to libraries, following a ruling by a federal judge in Rhode Island last month.

This is a massive win for libraries & communities in every state & territory!

right, so … this is why the layoffs that are being attributed to ai are happening. it’s technically true but it’s not about replacing people with ai it’s about spending out the ass on ai investments and having to cover those expenses to maintain a margin by lopping off salary expenses

very insane to watch this video and then rewatch the matrix, a film in which an evil ai keeps their human biofuel calm by convincing them it’s the peak of civilization, the end of the 20th century
