I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

I’m really surprised this isn’t bigger news. Just under 10 million people live in Tehran. Where can they go? Where else in Iran will have enough water? This will undoubtedly strain the country’s and the region’s politics, finances and governance capacity.

I should add that current projections are for an *exceedance* of IE carbon budget 2 (2026-2030) of 40-60%. It is simply not credible to suggest we can haul that back and *also* expand the data center sector. (Conversely: AI bubble burst and data centre *contraction* could actually help... 😬)

In cybersecurity, we talk about social engineering: taking advantage of social norms and human empathy to gain unwarranted access to sensitive systems.

I see this as social engineering at scale, attacking common blind spots in people's psyches in order to consolidate power.

The risk is colossal.

It should be our collective priority to bring all #Gaza’s children back to a learning environment after two years of war, trauma, and suffering.

The education system that existed in Gaza, largely run by UNRWA, must be fully re-established.

The hierarchy is clear: 75–85% of emission reductions through 2050 come from using less fossil fuel.

CCS plays a role, but it is strictly secondary, contributing a median of just 15–25%.

Technological neutrality is a political concept, not a scientific one.

It's hard to express how problematic non-transposition, and non-implementation of environmental law is. It creates a legal vacuum that means decision makers don't know how to handle planning applications, enforcement agencies can't enforce, and the courts are often called in to plug the gap
The EU Court has found that we have failed to even bring in the laws we’d need to comply with our obligations to combat water pollution.

Higher coastal walls & much rock armour are planned to protect Ireland's east coast railway, south from Dublin, against sea level rise. Trouble is, the engineers are only allowing 0.5m SLR by 2070.
As Prof. Richard Alley explains, worst-case is more like >1.0m. So using 0.5m is poor engineering.

Electricity should be maximum twice the price of gas to make a heat pump a good investment.

Yet still today, many electricity bills include taxes and levies that are far higher than those on gas.

Moving taxes off the electricity bill is a key tool governments have to make heat pumps attractive!
