Do #lipids carry the signatures of #evolution?🤔

In #Biochemistry Perspective, We 'provocatively' (as my former PhD guide & scientific guru Sankar put it ) propose an expanded view of the classic “lipid divide” idea

An Integrative View on Multiple “Lipid Divide” Events as Hallmarks of Distinct Evolutionary Transitions
Lipids are fundamental to life, serving not only as membrane components but also as key players in signaling, energy storage, and cellular identity. While the well-known “lipid divide” between Bacteri...

This one is a bit of a departure from the usual and definitely a work in progress!

We found that by using ab initio reconstruction at very high res, in very small steps, we could crack some small structures that had eluded us - e.g. 39kDa iPKAc (EMPIAR-10252), below.

Host invasion by a mycobacteriophage—visualized in action! 🦠✨
Thrilled to have contributed to this exciting work! Great collaboration with the amazing Krista @kfreeman.bsky.social & Graham Hatfull lab. Huge thanks to the Park lab for this fantastic opportunity 🙌 #CryoEM #CryoET #phage #mycobacteria
Hurray, it is finally out! Meet bacteriophage Bxb1 - the subject of my first full-phage cryo-EM study. My structures are beautifully complemented by the Park Lab’s cryo-ET analysis, shedding light on mycobacteriophage structural changes during infection.
