Brown: Autocrats don’t fear the disease or the babies dying from whooping cough — they fear the evidence of it, because evidence exposes their failures, demands accountability, and empowers the public.

I read this title earlier this year, and a number of fellow activists felt it wasn't hopeful enough. I disagree. HCR's substack is one I read daily. A historian, HCR shows readers that democracy has always been a struggle and is something worth fighting for.

Ever wonder where the 3.5% statistic came from? Erica Chenoweth and her co-author arrived at it while studying the peaceful overthrow of authoritarianism by civilian populations around the world. It's a short, somewhat wonky read if you care to dig deeper.

Howard Zinn’s work changed everything!
I am still reading this one. It's long, but so good. Both my daughters read it for AP US History. Makes me realize how daring their teachers were to assign this book as it is still considered radical, even today.

The last book on my list of what I read for my activist book clubs this year. It's an old title that would only be of interest to those who are curious about labor unions. I recommend other books I have previously reviewed over this one.

I was talking to my friend about injustice the other day. He made the point that sometimes people intentionally go out of their way to not understand or remain ignorant. I’m realizing some Americans want to be ignorant of US foreign policy. Many don’t care about anyone but themselves.

Let’s respond in community:
check on neighbors, show up for those targeted, document abuses, and push back together.

If he wasn’t in them.

He’d have released them.

There’s no other way to redeem SCOTUS at this point.

One cannot go to Hannah Arendt’s work for comfort, Jennifer Szalai writes of the German-born political thinker. What she offers instead is “the company of someone who had direct experience of the horrors of the 20th century yet never relinquished what she called amor mundi, or ‘love of the world.’”

Powerful to rally today with several hundred teachers, families, and community members in support of West Contra County teachers!

Our community supports the strike and will be out in the streets every day until teachers get a fair contract.
