this book is a rosetta stone for anglophone feminist studies in the 21st century. the surtext is “lets make sense of some fucked up shit together” (reasonable) but the subtext is all weird 5d chess shit about the lesser evil. which seemed reasonable then but in retrospect is centrist screen damage.

i forgot about this chapter until i made that joke lol (p good book btw; “animacies,” chen, 2012, DUP: pg 159-188; it is about how parental panics over lead paint in children’s toys animate/index both real phenomena like lead poisoning and racist fantasies about manufacturing/social reproduction)

Here I pluck an object from the lowest end of the animacy hierarchy: lead metal, a chemical element, an exemplar of inanimate matter. In the two previous chapters, I detailed how animality is coarticulated with humanity in ways that are soundly implicated in regimes of race, nation, and gender, disrupting clear divisions and categories that have profound implications ramifying from the linguistic to the bio-political. In this final part, I bring animacy theory to bear on metals; first by looking at recent racialized discourses around lead, and in the next chapter by focusing on mercury toxicity to discuss the vulnerability of human subjects in the face of ostensibly inanimate particles.
These particles are critically mobile and their status as toxins derives from their potential threat to valued human integrities. They further threaten to overrun what an animacy hierarchy would wish to lock in place.

i think im getting close to cracking what happened to the conservative mind (such as it was lol) but unfortunately i dont have any books about heavy metal toxicology so there’s some stuff i simply cant know without going to the library or a bookstore or googling it or asking someone who knows
