COP30 BREAKING NEWS

The presidency has just dropped a new package of texts including the "global mutirão" cover, which makes no mention of fossil fuels or roadmaps

Breaking: The Canadian government is being sued over its 2025 federal budget, which introduces new fossil fuel subsidies and weakens climate measures.

It's apparently the first case using the International Court of Justice’s climate advisory opinion.

💬At COFFIS Ministerial @cop30brazil.bsky.social , important to see small steps from some EU member states on fossil fuel subsidy phaseout - with the Netherlands and Belgium going furthest with phase-out plans (NL already out, BE very soon).
🚨Coming up at #COP30—Fiscal policies are key to transitioning away from fossil fuels.

Press conference room absolutely packed at #COP30 as 20+ ministers gather to call for a roadmap away from fossil fuels to be a key outcome of this summit

(Many more countries have expressed their support behind the scenes)

That's pretty weak phrasing - Parties could be urged to do a lot more, such as submit national inventories of their fossil fuel subsidies and action plans for gradually phasing them out.

⬇️ Looking at the current negotiation text of the COP30 cover decision 👀

(This is not the first time fossil fuel subsidy phase out appears in a decision, but last year in Baku, it was not mentioned)
Next, fossil fuel subsidies. "Urges Parties to work together towards phasing out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies that do not address energy poverty or just transitions, as soon as possible."

First, discussions on the just transition work programme have come up with a new text.

In it is the first mention of fossil fuel subsidy reform of this COP:

But there's a "no text" option indicating this text is opposed by some

EU Finance Minister's decisions on #climatefinance today give a muddled message.

Private finance isn’t delivering. The EU must scale up public finance, phase out fossil fuel subsidies & back polluter-pays taxes.
