Crazy to believe that in 2026, #Romania will be one of the top spenders amongst EU member on interest payments. Low revenues (bellow 35% of GDP) coupled with a high deficit (9,35% in 2024), high 10y yields (highest in the EU) brought us here. #econsky #econ

God forsake the deficit
Why do we forecast when we keep on missing the target?

#Romania is the EU champion by far when it comes down to the budgetary deficit. In October 2024, as part of the European Semester, we published our fiscal plan, wow, crazy, lovely targets, bring the deficit down do 7,0% in 2025. #econsky

look, I created a little thing about #Romania. Fun little project #econsky. Love to translate the data I gather and visualize into accessible info for people outside. Guess what? Inflation is rampant, screw it.
10% inflation
The sky is the limit around here.

Probably the craziest #inflation story in Europe is Romania. Household electricity prices are up 68% in august 2025. Why? #econsky

dumbest question comes from Casey (Hard Fork/Platform) questioning whether extraction of minerals/water from the global south can be counterbalanced with providing ChatGPT Pro free of charge for students of that nation in order to make them more competitive for the labor market wtf

For wonks, this is very interesting on how Hungary may have fiddled its income data to make it look like poverty was smaller than it was. Look at the suspicious clustering of incomes just *above the poverty line* in 2018 and 2021 vs 2014 and 2015.

I am reading #Palantir Karp's latest book The Technological Republic and cannot believe a PHD from a top tier German university wrote such garbage, filled with rhetorical traps to attract the "bright minds" of anti-woke podcast listeners.

can't believe the goof said a good thing hallelujah to this audience
Joe Rogan explains to his audience why due process is important and quotes Ben Franklin — "it is better 100 guilty persons should escape than that one innocent person should suffer.”

He argues against shipping people to a prison in El Salvador without trial because we think they’re gang members.

Startling graphs from Fritz Bartel’s book, The Triumph of Broken Promises. The economic transition from the 1970s to the end of the Cold War as unmanageable hard currency debts piled up in the Soviet bloc. Whilst the deindustrialization shock was more severe in the West than in the Soviet bloc.

Jesus what happened to UNCTAD, it would once have denounced this as the financialisation of oceans
“The opportunities offered to us by our oceans are immense, under certain conditions. We need to put ourselves in a position to ensure that our oceans serve our economies in a sustainable manner,” said Pascal Lamy, Ex-WTO chief and Chair of the Blue Economy and Finance Forum.

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

OK, not a one-to-one comparison, as Americans have no fascination with the quarter-zips. But people who insist that Zelenskyy should have worn a suit should answer a very simple question. Would Trump and MAGA have a different position on Ukraine if Zelenskyy wore a suit this entire time?
