I settled on a clip from the (incredible) doc Sly Lives! (watch it now on Hulu if you haven't.) I think it's the most transparent commentary I ever heard from D'Angelo; it's about Sly, but it's really about him.

The fictional nightclub Natalie’s (Gladys Knight was Natalie) was the hottest spot in town, making even those of us who were blessed to frequent Ron Grant’s R&B showcases, Sugarbar, and Tillman’s (IYKYK) wish it was real.

New York Undercover’s early seasons were gonna deliver two things each episode: An ill ass cold open with the perfect hip hop track, and a perfectly nostalgic live R&B performance in the 3rd act and closing credits - usually a cover of a 70s or early 80s soul classic.
